What's Worth Watching in the Sky This September

The month opens with a departure. On August 30, a Falcon Heavy is scheduled to lift off from Kennedy Space Center carrying the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, the four-billion-dollar observatory this column previewed in August — a mirror the size of Hubble's, a field of view at least a hundred times wider, bound for a gravitational parking spot a million miles away. Once aloft, it will spend its first several weeks unfolding and cooling down, which means September's sky belongs not to the new telescope but to the oldest instruments available: your eyes, pointed west at dusk.

That is where Venus is, and Venus is the story of the month. The planet has been brightening in the evening sky since it cleared the Sun's glare in early summer, and on September 22 it reaches greatest brilliancy — magnitude minus 4.8, its peak brightness for the year — low in the southwest just after sunset. At that brightness Venus is more than twenty times brighter than the brightest star in the sky. People will report it as a UFO. Some will report it as a plane that never moves. It is neither; it is a planet the size of Earth wrapped in clouds that reflect three-quarters of the sunlight that touches them, and for a few weeks it is impossible to miss.

Before that peak comes the month's most precise piece of celestial theater, though Americans only get the dress rehearsal. On September 14, the waxing crescent Moon passes directly in front of Venus — an occultation, the astronomical term for one body hiding another: the Moon slides between Earth and the planet, and Venus simply blinks out behind its edge. This one happens in broad daylight across Europe, Africa and parts of Asia, with Venus re-emerging from the Moon's opposite edge up to an hour later. From North America the alignment has already broken apart by the time the sky darkens; what we get instead, that evening, is the crescent Moon hanging within about five degrees of Venus above the western horizon — the two brightest objects in the night sky, close enough to cover with a thumb at arm's length. It is the month's best photo opportunity, and it requires no equipment whatsoever.

Early risers get their own conjunction first: on the mornings of September 6 and 7, the Moon passes within roughly three degrees of Mars in the pre-dawn eastern sky, around 3 a.m. local time. Mars is dim and distant this month, a modest orange point, but the pairing is a pleasant excuse to be awake before the neighborhood is.

The engine underneath September's calendar is the equinox, which arrives on the 23rd. Autumn begins in the Northern Hemisphere, spring in the Southern, and day and night briefly agree on terms everywhere. The equinox does two quiet things for skywatchers beyond marking the season. First, geometry around the equinoxes statistically favors auroras — the tilt of Earth's magnetic field aligns more favorably with the solar wind, so late September is a good time for mid-latitude observers to keep an eye on space-weather alerts. Second, it sets up the Harvest Moon.

The full moon of September 26 — peaking at 12:49 p.m. Eastern — is the Harvest Moon, the name given not to a month but to a relationship: whichever full moon lands closest to the autumnal equinox. The title comes with a genuine mechanical quirk. Around the equinox, the Moon's path makes a shallow angle with the evening horizon, so instead of rising roughly 50 minutes later each night as it does most of the year, the full moon rises only 20 to 30 minutes later for several nights running. Before electric light, that string of bright, early-rising moons let farmers keep working the fields after sunset — hence the name. The effect is real and observable: for most of that week, a huge golden moon will be sitting on the eastern horizon just as the evening starts.

The same week the Moon goes full, the outer solar system checks in. Neptune reaches opposition on September 26. Opposition means Earth sits directly between a planet and the Sun — the arrangement that brings the planet closest to us for the year, lights it fully, and keeps it up all night, rising at sunset and setting at dawn. It is the best week of the year to look at any outer planet, and for Neptune that still means a telescope and a finder chart; no one has ever seen it naked-eye. The more rewarding target is Saturn, which is sliding toward its own opposition on October 4. From roughly September 20 onward the view is practically indistinguishable from opposition night: the planet rises around sunset, shines at magnitude 0.3 — the brightest thing in the southern evening sky after the Moon — and its rings, which spent last year nearly edge-on and almost invisible, are tilting back open. If someone you know has a telescope gathering dust, late September is the month to make them point it at Saturn.

The month's quietest gift is darkness itself. The new moon on September 11 anchors the best stretch of dark-sky nights, and it carries a deadline: this is one of the last months of the year to see the Milky Way's bright core from the Northern Hemisphere. The galactic center hangs in the southwest after nightfall and sinks earlier each evening; by November it is gone until spring. If a dark-sky trip has been sitting on your list all summer, the week around the 11th is the year politely clearing its throat.

August closes with a near-total blood moon just past and a telescope waiting on the pad. September asks for less drama and more patience: a brilliant planet at dusk, a big golden moon rising early for a week, the galaxy's core making its seasonal exit. None of it requires equipment. All of it requires looking up.
