2026-27 NBA PREVIEW: TITLE FAVORITES, LEBRON'S MOVE, AND ROOKIES TO WATCH

[THE BARGAIN] LeBron took a pay cut.

  • LeBron James, 41, the NBA's career scoring leader, left a Lakers salary of nearly $53 million for a two-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers worth about $8 million.
  • In June the oddsmakers rated Philadelphia a 60-to-1 long shot to win the title; within hours of his signing, the team had roughly one chance in ten.

[THE FAVORITES] Spurs and Thunder lead.

  • San Antonio, led by center Victor Wembanyama, pictured, and Oklahoma City are the co-favorites, each given about a one-in-four chance.
  • The 76ers open on October 20th at Madison Square Garden against the champion New York Knicks, and LeBron's first home game two nights later is against Cleveland, the team that drafted him in 2003.
