WHAT TO WATCH IN THE SKY THIS OCTOBER

[OCTOBER 4TH] Saturn's closest night.

  • Saturn lines up opposite the Sun, so it rises at sunset and shines all night.
  • Two mornings later, the Moon goes after a much bigger planet.

[OCTOBER 6TH] The Moon swallows Jupiter.

  • Before dawn, a thin crescent Moon slides in front of Jupiter and hides it for about an hour.
  • Later in the month, Halley's Comet sends a meteor shower.

[OCTOBER 21ST] Halley's Comet, in pieces.

  • The Orionids are dust from Halley's Comet, hitting the air at 41 miles a second.
  • Expect 10 to 20 meteors an hour in the dark before dawn.
